ES-SO

ES-SO – the European Solar Shading Organisation – is the European umbrella trade association representing national solar shading organizations and companies involved in the manufacture, supply and installation of interior and exterior shading solutions. Based in Belgium, the organization acts as the collective voice of the European solar shading industry and works to increase recognition of solar shading as an essential technology for energy-efficient, climate-resilient and comfortable buildings.

ES-SO promotes solutions such as external and internal blinds, roller shutters, awnings, screens, automated shading systems and other dynamic solar-control technologies. These systems help manage solar heat gains, reduce overheating, improve daylight use and indoor comfort, and lower the need for mechanical cooling and air conditioning.

The organization represents the sector before European institutions, policymakers, standardization bodies and other construction-industry stakeholders. Its activities cover European energy and building regulations, technical standards, research, sustainability, professional education, market awareness and industry advocacy.

Through its technical work, ES-SO contributes to European and international standards and participates in research projects focused on the energy performance of buildings and adaptive building-envelope technologies. It also operates the European Solar Shading Database, which provides independently validated performance data for solar shading products and materials.

Professional education is another important area of activity. Through the ES-SO Academy and sector training initiatives, the organization supports the development of qualified solar shading professionals and promotes better understanding of shading technologies among architects, engineers, installers and other construction professionals.

ES-SO also leads awareness initiatives such as Global Shading Day and works with national associations, manufacturers, policymakers and research organizations to promote solar shading as a passive, low-carbon solution for reducing cooling demand and improving the resilience of European buildings.
