Europe’s glass industry is under increasing pressure as prices for flat and float glass hit record levels in mid-2025, driven by soaring energy bills, raw material shortages, and mounting regulatory demands.

According to new market data, float glass prices have reached:.

  • $637/ton in Germany
  • $664/ton in France
  • Over $860/ton in the UK

This marks a year-on-year increase of over 12% in some countries — a surge that’s affecting the entire supply chain, from major construction projects to small and mid-size window manufacturers.

“We are witnessing a structural shift in the European glass industry,” said a spokesperson for the European Glass Manufacturers Federation (EGMF). “The cost of producing glass is no longer just a matter of energy fluctuations — it’s also about compliance with stricter environmental targets and the volatility of raw material markets.”

🔍 What’s Driving the Price Hike?

Several key factors are combining to push prices higher:

  • Energy costs: High dependence on natural gas continues to inflate production expenses.
  • Raw material volatility: Inputs like silica sand, soda ash, and dolomite are in shorter supply and higher demand.
  • Sustainability pressures: EU decarbonization targets are accelerating investment in greener — but costlier — production technologies.

The EU’s Producer Price Index (PPI) for glass manufacturing rose to 126.9 in May 2025, up from 120.5 in January — a clear indicator of ongoing inflation in the sector.

Impact on Industry and End Users.

The rising prices are already influencing procurement decisions across Europe. Many companies in construction, glazing, automotive, and design are:

  • Rethinking long-term supply agreements;
  • Exploring recycled or alternative glass solutions;
  • Calling for clearer EU-level support mechanisms.

“We are at a turning point,” the EGMF warns. “Without strategic support, European glass production risks losing competitiveness — right when it’s needed most for sustainable buildings and energy-efficient infrastructure.”
