AV COMPOSITES: How Material Science Is Reshaping the Insulated Panel
In construction, some of the most important innovations remain largely invisible.
They are found inside roofs, shutters, doors and controlled industrial environments, where the performance of a building often depends on the quality of the materials concealed beneath the surface.
This is the field in which French manufacturer AV Composites has built its reputation.
Established in 2005 by Vincent Aprin and Fabrice Gravier, the company specialises in the design and production of insulated sandwich panels for conservatories, outdoor structures, closures, buildings, industry and leisure applications.
From its industrial base in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, AV Composites has developed a business centred on bonding technology, multi-material assembly and continuous product research.
Its work begins with a deceptively simple principle: combining different materials in a way that improves insulation, mechanical strength, durability and ease of manufacture.
The result is a broad portfolio of technical panels developed for applications ranging from conservatory roofs and pergolas to aluminium shutters, entrance doors, gates and clean rooms.
At the centre of the company’s expertise is its mastery of adhesive bonding.
AV Composites uses two-component polyurethane adhesive systems designed to provide consistent cohesion, strong mechanical performance and flexibility without brittleness. This technical foundation allows different facings and insulating cores to be assembled into panels capable of responding to demanding thermal, structural and environmental requirements.
Research and development plays a central role in this process.
The company reports investing approximately 3,000 hours each year in research, supported by computer-aided design, 3D printing, spectro-colour measurement, microscopy and equipment for testing traction, bending, peeling, acoustics and resistance to corrosive environments.
This approach has resulted in a continuing programme of patented products.
One of the company’s most significant developments is NOVAFERMT®, a range of grooved insulated panels created for aluminium shutters, doors, gates and fencing.
Its most distinctive innovation is a powder-coatable sandwich panel protected by a European patent.
Traditionally, manufacturers working with aluminium closures may need to manage numerous stocks corresponding to different colours and finishes. AV Composites developed a thermoplastic insulating core capable of withstanding the temperatures used during powder coating.
This allows the completed panel and the surrounding aluminium components to be coated together.
For manufacturers, the advantages are practical as well as aesthetic. A single stock panel can be cut into different shapes and subsequently finished in an extensive range of colours and surface effects. This can reduce coloured inventory, simplify production and create greater consistency between the panel and the rest of the closure.
The company also states that the panel is manufactured from recycled material and remains fully recyclable, linking production efficiency with a more circular use of resources.
Beyond closures, NOVATOIT® brings together AV Composites’ solutions for conservatory and outdoor roofing.
These panels are designed to address the evolving role of the conservatory, which is increasingly regarded as a genuine living space rather than a seasonal extension. As a result, thermal insulation, acoustic comfort, aesthetics and compatibility with low-pitch or flat-roof designs have become increasingly important.
For industrial applications, the NOVACLEAN® range provides aluminium sandwich panels and accessories for controlled environments, including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, food production, microelectronics and specialised industrial processes.
The diversity of these markets illustrates the adaptability of the sandwich panel.
Although the final applications vary considerably, the underlying challenge remains similar: to bring together lightness, insulation, surface quality and mechanical performance within one manufactured component.
AV Composites has expanded its production capacity around this principle. Its three semi-continuous manufacturing lines are designed to combine flexibility with industrial productivity, allowing the company to serve both specialised technical requirements and larger-volume orders.
Its development has also been recognised through several entrepreneurship and innovation awards, including distinctions from the French National Institute of Industrial Property and OSEO.
Yet the company’s strongest argument is found in the products themselves.
AV Composites does not merely produce insulating panels. It develops material systems intended to simplify the work of manufacturers, improve the performance of finished products and create new design possibilities.
As construction moves towards better insulation, lighter components and more responsible resource use, these technical layers are becoming increasingly important.
The future of the building envelope may be judged by what is visible from the outside. But much of its performance will continue to depend on the innovation hidden within.
