Cortizo expands circular economy strategy with new aluminium recycling plant in Spain

Cortizo has strengthened its commitment to sustainability and circular production with the inauguration of a new aluminium recycling plant in Coirós, in the Spanish region of Galicia.
The multinational officially opened the facility during an event attended by the President of the Xunta of Galicia, Alfonso Rueda, alongside regional and local authorities.
The new plant represents an investment of approximately €38 million and forms part of the company’s long-term strategy to reinforce aluminium recycling and reduce the environmental impact of production. Covering around 29,000 m² on a 110,000 m² industrial site near the A-6 motorway, the facility is equipped with advanced processing and melting technology capable of producing up to 100,000 tonnes of recycled aluminium billet per year.
According to the company, the plant focuses entirely on post-consumer recycled aluminium, recovering material from products that have reached the end of their lifecycle, including windows, doors, façades and balustrades removed from buildings. The recovered aluminium is processed, separated and melted before being transformed into new extrusion billets used in the production of aluminium profiles.

During the inauguration, Cortizo Managing Director Raquel Cortizo described the project as a continuation of a strategy the company began more than three decades ago. She noted that the company had already started recycling aluminium in the early 1990s, becoming one of the first manufacturers in Spain to integrate a fully closed-loop aluminium production cycle.
The billets produced at the new Coirós plant, marketed under the name “Infinity”, are manufactured using post-consumer recycled aluminium and are designed for use in profile extrusion systems. Cortizo stated that the production process can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 86% and lower energy consumption by approximately 95% compared to primary aluminium production, based on European aluminium industry averages.
The company also highlighted its continued industrial investment in Galicia, where it has invested more than €228 million in recent years across projects including new production facilities, plant expansions and technological development centres.
Operations at the new recycling centre begin with around 20 direct employees, with plans to expand the workforce as production capacity increases.
